What these standards actually require

Certificate numbers mean little without knowing what was tested. Here is what each referenced standard covers, and which of our products or operations it was applied to.

EN ISO 12100:2010
Safety of machinery — General principles for design — Risk assessment and risk reduction
Applied to all three product types

The foundational machinery safety standard. It sets out the terminology, principles and methodology a designer must follow to identify every hazard a machine presents across its whole life — installation, normal operation, cleaning, maintenance, fault-finding and decommissioning — then estimate and evaluate the risk of each, and either eliminate it or reduce it far enough.

It also requires that the whole assessment be documented and verified, which is what makes the result auditable by a third party rather than a matter of the manufacturer's word. Every other machinery safety standard is built on top of it.

EN 60204-1:2018
Safety of machinery — Electrical equipment of machines — Part 1: General requirements
Applied to all three product types

Governs the electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment of machines supplied at up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC, at frequencies up to 200 Hz. In practice it is the standard that determines whether the wiring, supply disconnection, emergency stop circuits, protective bonding, overcurrent protection, control circuits and markings of a machine are safe and consistent.

For an automated warehouse this is the standard that matters most to the people who will maintain the system — it governs how power is isolated before someone works on a machine.

EN 15095:2007+A1:2008
Power-operated mobile racking and shelving, carousels and storage lifts — Safety requirements
Applied to the Mercury shuttle lift

Where EN ISO 12100 is general, this is the product-specific standard written for exactly this class of equipment: powered storage lifts, carousels and mobile racking. It addresses the hazards particular to storage machinery that moves loads vertically in an occupied building — trapping and shearing points, load retention, overtravel, access interlocking and safe operator positions.

Its presence on a certificate is a meaningful signal, because it means the machine was assessed against requirements written for storage lifts rather than against generic machinery clauses alone.

Directive 2006/42/EC
Machinery Directive — Annex I, essential health and safety requirements
The legal basis for all three EC type statements

The EU legislation that machinery must satisfy to be placed on the European market. Annex I is the list of essential health and safety requirements it must meet by design. The standards above are the harmonised technical means of demonstrating that compliance.

SGS Italia examined our technical files and inspected the machinery as a Competent Body, and states that each type conforms to those Annex I requirements.

ISO 9001:2015
Quality management systems — Requirements
Applied to our manufacturing operation

The standard that sets out what an organisation must do to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. It covers process control, supplier management, corrective action and continual improvement, all verified by external audit.

It is the most widely recognised quality qualification in industrial procurement, and is frequently a baseline requirement before a supplier is even considered for a tender.

ISO 14001:2015
Environmental management systems — Requirements with guidance for use
Applied to our manufacturing operation

A management system standard rather than a product standard. It requires an organisation to identify the environmental impacts of what it does, set objectives against them, control its operations and suppliers accordingly, and demonstrate measurable improvement over time — all of it verified by external audit.

It increasingly appears as a mandatory qualification criterion in public tenders and in the supplier codes of large retailers and third-party logistics providers.

ISO 45001:2018
Occupational health and safety management systems — Requirements with guidance for use
Applied to our manufacturing operation

Sets requirements for a management system to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions. It requires the organisation to proactively identify hazards, assess and control risk, and involve workers in the process — again verified by external audit rather than self-declared.

Alongside ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, it completes the standard three-part integrated management system that customers and tender boards typically ask a manufacturer to hold.

Verifying these certificates
