Autobio case study

Intro

Autobio, a pharmaceutical and biologics company, partnered with HWArobotics to deploy a fully automated, temperature-controlled storage system at one of its facilities in Asia. Handling high-value biologics under strict cold-chain requirements, Autobio needed a solution capable of delivering both the reliability and scale demanded by pharmaceutical-grade storage.

Challenge

Autobio's operations presented a distinct set of pressures tied to the sensitivity and scale of biologics storage:

High-value biologics: high product value demands high equipment stability
2–8°C cold storage: special temperature-controlled environments demand higher equipment reliability
Large-scale storage needs: large material volumes outpace the space utilization of traditional flat warehouses
Low-temperature manual work: harsh conditions for manual storage/retrieval in cold storage environments
Automation upgrade needs: storage, picking, and packaging still involve heavy manual labor

Solution

HWArobotics designed and deployed a high-bay automated storage system built around a 17.7m warehouse height with 8 aisles and 116,032 storage locations, powered by 224 standard box shuttle vehicles and 16 goods lifts. The high-bay multi-shuttle system automates the entire storage, picking, and packaging process, while automated packaging lines and downstream sorting systems create efficient logistics nodes across the facility. A unified scheduling and order-verification picking system supports chilled, frozen, and ambient materials simultaneously, adapting to the specialized environmental demands of pharmaceutical warehousing.
